Nothing connects - apart from FireFox

I am struck with boredom since nothing connects up to the internet, apart from my browser.

Yesterday, I played CSS fine, I also played Guildwars fine too. Today when I go on my pc, nothing connects, not even Xfire or MSN. I think the problem is to do with my router, altho i dont know why it would change over night.

I am using a Belkin 4 port cable router. I have a connection of 700kb (approx not exact). I have searched google etc and found it might be do with the "ports being closed". This means nothing to me and I cant do anyhitng about it.

CSS works until I get to the server list and it doesnt refresh any. Guild wars gets stuck on the loading screen where it says "connecting to arena net"

Any help in solving this is very very... helpful

Just a suggestion. Contact your service provider. Maybe they can help with the problem.

that portforward is too complicated for me. I have a belkin router but i cant find which mine is exactly.

It is possible to change over night. I had mine do it. When I bought a new router and I tried setting it up with static IP addresses like the old one and I could only surf to about 1/2 the normal places I usually go. Not even my own web site, no email too. I had to change every thing to dynamic IP and then everything worked again! Bought the same router to replace the old one that stopped working, go figure.

WOW. I had the exact same thing happen to me yesterday. I was playing CSS and then it stopped refreshing servers. I then tried to get online but it wouldn't connect. I tried Guild wars and it stayed in the loading screen to connect to Anet! That can't be just a coincidence. I have a Linksys wireless router. What do you have?

Ah, I see now. Maybe it's not the router? I have a firewall, maybe it's that. But that's weird. Why would it work fine for months and then just wig out?

I just need to know how to "open ports", that way I can find the port from portforward.com and open it

The problem AFAIK is that your dynamic IP has changed. You'll need to update every exception to your router firewall with the new IP. If you already knew your previous IP address, check www.whatismyip.com to see if its changed.

I have the same problem sometimes with my router but never with applications like GW. Mostly p2p software and some other minor things are affected.

You need to go into your router. Find your default gateway address...this is accessible on Win XP vie the following route....

Control Panel>Network Connections>(Right Click on your Connection>STATUS> *Default Gateway/IP address should be listed there on the SUPPORT Tab

After obtaining that IP, use it in your address bar of your browser, for instance:

http://19*.168.1.1

NOw here's the tricky part. I utilize a Network Associates router, which is essentially a Lynksys, so I'm not sure if this will help you, but you should get the general idea.

On my model, I have to first go into ADVANCED SET UP, then FORWARDING. There you are able to alter ports, open or close, and see exactly what is going on. For games like CSS or UT, etc... generally you should have a Port 6667 open. (On my router, I had to manually add the opening of this port under an option of "Customized Applications.")

Be careful what you tinker with there if you have never set it up before. If you haven't ever done anything here, then most likely a simple DHCP release and renew on your router STATUS tab should do the trick.

What model of the Belkin router do you have? Usually Belkin routers will not block the port GW uses, as I have NEVER needed to forward them.

Also look in the instructions and go in to your router, write down all you settings (espically wireless) currently and you can try to "default" the router to make it back to factor settings and then go in reset up password, wireless and special settings.

So does my dynamic IP address change automatically or something? I had everything set up and it was working fine. Do I have to update my IP?

It's just funny that the exact same thing happened to me yesterday. Except that after I turned off my computer and turned it back on, it was working again. Then it would not work. Then it would work. ??? Not sure what was going on.

EDIT: I should mention now that I am no longer using the router (my dads house uses BT connection 2mb, with modem and network huB) but still the same problem

Okay your router address should always be the same. Use the address listed in "Default Gateway" rather than IP. You were trying to connect to your own IP there. It generally should end in *.1.1 or .1.2.

After you gain access to the router settings pages, the rest will make sense.

EDIT: If you are having the same problem with connections and are no longer using the router, it sounds more like a Firewall or the nasty Windows Security Center. If you are using a Firewall be sure and check the block list on ports. And I recommend a removal of windows XP built in firewalls (replaced with something that actually works properly).

Are you using a software firewall (ex... Nortorn Internet Security, Windows Firewall, port magic).... those can change your entire system virtually overnight. There could have been an update to your software firewall that ended up closing some ports. With technology that is constantly changing the probability of this happening is very great. Thats why software firewalls are for the most part are a very bad idea.... unless your time is worthless.
If you want things like that, always use hardware to produce your desired effect.

HW Firewall > SW Firewall
RAID > NTFS Striping
HD with build in compression > NTFS Compression
